UST Global's proprietary job creation program aims to train and place 5,000 women into technology roles by 2020
BOSTON, Jan. 19, 2016 -- UST Global, a Los Angeles-based leading provider of end-to-end digital solutions and IT services for Global 1000 companies, announced today that 29 women graduated from Step IT Up America (SIUA) Boston, part of its nationwide, proprietary STEM program that trains and guarantees job placement for minority and urban women in technology. All 29 women will join UST Global as employees and will begin assignments as consultants with State Street Corporation starting in January 2016. The women will work in agile roles, business analyst roles, project coordinator roles, and as quality assurance testers.
A graduation ceremony was held in Boston on December 16th to celebrate the accomplishments of the 29 women, following completion of a three-month accelerated training program where they went from non-technical academic backgrounds to enter into high paying technology careers.
"Throughout Step IT Up America's journey, we have been fortunate to partner with companies who share our commitment to fostering the participation of women in technology. State Street has a long history of creating opportunities for women, and these graduates will be part of that legacy," said UST Global CEO Sajan Pillai. "Women are a missing voice in innovation, and we are the poorer for it. We as technology-focused companies only stand to benefit by supporting their participation, and we are excited to see what these women do in their careers."
"We are pleased to celebrate the success of the 29 Step IT Up graduates and look forward to officially welcoming them into the State Street family," said Chris Perretta, global head of Enterprise Data & Technology for State Street. "Women make up half of the US workforce today, yet remain vastly underrepresented in information technology. This is one critical effort to make up that difference. We thank UST for their efforts to bring these opportunities to minority and urban women, and greater gender balance to the IT workforce at large."
Right now, women make up just one fourth of the STEM workforce, and Step IT Up America aims to bridge that gap, with a focus on IT. The program has been commended by the likes of Vice President Joe Biden, who visited Step IT Up America's program in Detroit, and Rahm Emanuel, Mayor of Chicago, welcomed the program to the Windy City.
Since the program's launch in 2014, over 300 women have graduated from the program, moving to jobs that range from data management to analytics. These women are just the start of the program's end goal of placing 5,000 women in technology jobs by 2020. To date, Step IT Up America has successfully launched in cities across the country including: Atlanta, Philadelphia, Detroit, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York.
